what happened to this? it used to be just like mc classic and now it runs on a completely different engine and has the 1.4 mc sounds wtf happened?!

Click 'pure classic mode' in the launcher if you want the game to be exactly like the original classic.

It still is.. loads of care has been taken when developing the new client to make it extremely similar to the old stuff.
and now it runs on a completely different engine
New client, better performance. We were getting nowhere with the old one, and Mojang no longer wanted us hosting it.

Feel free to replace the sounds yourself.
