The usual cause of that is fontscache.txt got corrupted. If you open fontscache.txt in notepad does it show a bunch of spaces?
Just delete fontscache.txt and the game will automatically remake it.
Also, if you update your game to latest dev build (main menu -> options -> updates), it will just show a warning instead of crashing when that happens.
