What does this error mean and how do I fix it? I wanted to play today but keep getting this error. Any help would be much appreciated.

It means the attempt to connect to the server failed.
Unfortunately not much assistance can be provided - generally this is a temporary issue on your side.
Is the update message in the bottom right showing 'update check failed'?
