We use reCaptcha, which is in use by a lot of communities everywhere.
They are designed so that as long as you get one of the parts of it right, it'll let the person register.
There is also a refresh button that will grab a new one for the user.
We will not be changing from recaptcha because no system that we could roll ourselves would be as secure and accessible as what we have now.
